And I’ll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again
This was taking forever, and getting nowhere fast. Nearly every woman that Theo spoke with was on the verge of tears if not openly crying, trembling, quivering with anxiety and fear for themselves and their loved ones. And the men seemed so quiet and subdued by the events of the afternoon that it took twice as long to get anything useful out of them. If any of the people he’d spoken to so far had been the guilty party, they were amazing actors.

He rubbed his face, pressing lightly against his temples as he took a few minutes to breathe as the last suspect left the room and was escorted back down to the parlor. With a sigh, he called out another name to his colleagues just beyond the door, and jotted down a few notes while he waited. The last gentleman had been particularly quiet, but had been seen in the Butterfly Gardens for the bulk of the party, and Theo believed him when he’d said he hadn’t seen anything, or had anything to drink.

But while most of the people he’d interviewed thus far had been Ministry employees, or the spouses of them, he didn’t recognize the next name on his roster. It made his brow furrow in a moment of confusion. Theo didn’t know everyone in the wizarding world, of course, but even the person’s name seemed strange to him. Tapping his fingers against the desk, he glanced up as the door opened and the individual stepped inside.

“Have a seat,” he said bluntly, shuffling some parchments around until he came to the sheet he wanted. “Please state your name for the records, and tell me what brought you to the Minister’s manor today.”

It had been a long time since Baddi had seen a body drop like that. He'd seen the whole thing happen, unfortunately, but as the minister had fallen, all he could see was Elizabeth. Baddi sat and waited his turn calmly, but on the inside all he could do was repeatedly picture the similarity between the minister and his dead spouse. They both fell with such finality to them, something that Baddi had always had a hard time getting out of his head. Now here he was, dealing with Aurors just like he had that night. They scared him, that was to say the least. He was worried for himself, he was worried for Bastian, but mostly he was worried for Jo. He had seen how that Auror had treated her. Maybe they had bad history, he wasn't aware as they didn't know each other that well, but that wasn't the way to treat a lady.

Baddi sat down in the seat softly, almost as if to hide himself. He adjusted his tux as he watched the Auror, the one that had an argument with Jo. Baddi glanced around the room out of curiosity, only paying attention when he was spoken to. His bright blue eyes met the other man's before he said, "Baddi Agnarsson, sir." He scooted his chair forward so that his stomach was almost touching the table, and then let his hands rest atop it. He folded them as he took a deep breath and continued speaking, "I was here to earn money, sir. I don't come by jobs very often because of my heritage." and because I'm a werewolf. Baddi knew he was probably going to have to tell the other man, but he was nervous.

Baddi sat in the silence for a second before he quietly said, "Sir, I am a werewolf. Please do not be alarmed, I am a decent person. I just needed money for food." Baddi kept his eyes toward the Auror, but he looked to his left. He didn't want to meet his eyes from fear. His leg jiggled a little before he made it stop, "Please do not hurt me." Baddi was in a vulnerable position and so he said the only thing that he could to express how he felt in that moment. His English was a little rough and sometimes he couldn't find the right words, but he knew what he said so far was correct.

And I’ll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again
“Yes, you’re not the first just looking to make end’s meet,” Theo said idly, taking notes with all of the passion of someone who’d written some variation of the same thing a thousand times over already. He didn’t give much thought to the second comment, even as he jotted it down - as a muggleborn himself, he was more than aware of how one’s blood status could have a negative impact on one’s ability to survive in a purist-controlled world. As badly as he hoped, as they all did, to get to the bottom of the Minister’s murder, it felt as though they’d already been at it all night. He was tired, and hungry, and needed a shower, and wait, what was that?!

Theo blinked, multiple times in quick succession, and sat bolt-upright in his chair, not out of fear, but out of genuine surprise.

“I’m sorry, you’re a what?” he asked incredulously, staring at the man sitting across from him in disbelief. Sure, the announcement of the new werewolf legislation had required all werewolves to register with the Ministry, but there had been such a public outcry at the announcement that Theo couldn’t think of a single werewolf who would actually choose to approach the Ministry of their own free will.

He cleared his throat quite hastily and tugged at the collar of his shirt for a moment before sitting back in his chair. Way to encourage stereotypes, Wood. Reaching up slowly, Theo rubbed his eyes, and then slowly pinched the bridge of his nose, keeping his eyes shut for a few moments as his brain and his mouth got up to speed. As far as he was aware, he’d never actually met a werewolf before - particularly not an honest and upfront one. Though, of course, given the situation, he’d probably be terribly honest himself.

“My apologies, Mr. Agnarsson,” he said with an apologetic nod of his head. “After so many of these interviews, this is probably the last thing that I expected to be told this evening.” With a small, tired sigh, Theo began thumbing through his papers until he found a particular document. “I can assure you, no one here is going to harm you. I must remind you of the new legislation, and ask that you make your way to the Ministry of Magic as soon as possible to begin the registration process. You will get a notice via owl post with more explicit instructions soon, and should note that failure to present yourself to the Ministry will result in arrest.”

He set the little script aside with a small grimace of disgust. This felt like one large slippery slope, and he hated being required to say such things aloud. Even if this man was a killer, he was innocent until proven guilty. “Not everyone is afraid of those who are different than them, Mr. Agnarsson, and I’d daresay the majority of the Auror Office would rather not harm anyone innocent.”

Clearing his throat again, Theo shuffled his way back to the front of his pile of notes and questions. “Now then, tell me what you were doing in the, say, half-hour leading up to the Minister’s speech.”

Baddi had heard it all before. He'd heard people say that not everyone judges, that not everyone thought he should be dead, but Baddi had experienced so many bad people in the world that he didn't trust words. Baddi trusted actions, and that's exactly what got Elizabeth killed. She had stood up for him, she'd fought for her right to be with him, but their parents had made sure that they would never be together again. All it had taken was a set of bad Aurors and she was gone from his life. He had been lucky enough to make it out alive himself, so he wasn't just going to take the other man's word. He would admit that he believed what the man said, though.

He listened to the Auror's question and then thought about what he had been doing. He'd walked around with drinks, he'd spied a couple people he'd rather be dead than caught alive with, and then there was Jo. She'd caused him to smile, something he didn't do very often, and it felt good. Baddi swallowe before tilting his head back and forth a little, his accent obvious as he spoke, "The uh..." Baddi paused for a second, trying to find the right words to say. English wasn't his first language, and he definitely struggled sometimes. "the bakki. The tray? I was giving people drinks." And how some of them would rather throw up to taking a drink from him if they knew who he was. A part of him took pleasure from knowing he had one upped those people. "I saw Jo. She's a nice lady. Went back to giving drinks."

Baddi frowned for a second as he thought about what he was saying. He was near the drinks when the minister was poisoned and he was sure as shit that they would pin it on him if he didn't give them a good reason as to why he was there. He grunted for a moment before saying, "Eitur, yeah? I don't know anything about eitur. The uh..." He sat there for a moment, trying to think of the word before he suddenly clutched his own throat and then stuck his tongue out with his eyes closed. "I don't die someone." He shrugged his shoulders at the Auror again and let out a small sigh. Why did he agree to come here again? Now he was stuck in a stupid tuxedo for an even longer period of time.

And I’ll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again
It was an active process, suppressing the knowledge that this individual was a werewolf from his thoughts as he made notes on what Baddi said. Werewolves were monstrous during the full moon, that was true, but Theo had to believe that the majority were just regular people during the rest of the month. This man was here working, trying to earn money, in a short-term gig where his condition wouldn’t be known, and therefore wouldn’t be held against him. Theo understood where he was coming from, but the backlash from the Werewolf Legislation did linger in the back of his mind. A werewolf would potentially have motive, revenge.

But no. He was here to get the facts, and he would know if this person was lying. “Poison,” he responded, resisting a smile at the mimicry of death. “I’m sure that you can understand why anyone who was handling drinks this evening will need to be questioned extensively. The barkeep, the man preparing the drinks - tell me about him, and your interactions with him. Did you talk to each other? Did he have anyone else behind the bar at any point? Did he seem to be acting strange, or nervous?”

So the word was poison, poison was the word, the stuff that killed the minister was poison... Baddi's eyebrow pulled together as he ran the word through his head. He had known that word, but his nervousness was clashing with his English. He had grown decent with speaking since he moved here with the pack, but here he was with his tongue tied. Talking and listening were two different things, but Baddi was able to keep up with what the Auror was saying so far. Baddi took a second to let the words sink in and make sure he fully understood what the man was asking before replying, his accent still thick, "There was a height man." Baddi raised his hand up high to show the man was tall. He took in a deep breath and shook his head a little in thought and said, "Other than that, I didn't see what you ask. I'm not..." Baddi's eyebrows pulled together so much that they almost touched. He rubbed his lips together before saying, "What's the word for see all?" Baddi had never been the observant type, he'd always just lived in the moment and accepted things as they were. The only time he caught gestures or noticed unsaid words was when someone else pointed them out to him. Though... he had noticed how upset Jo looked until she saw him. He'd been so happy to see her smile the way she did. Worry suddenly spiked in him when he asked, "No one else was hurt, right?" Bastian and Jo were there too and he hadn't had the chance to see them.

And I’ll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again
A tall man? That was certainly something new. Theo made a quick note of it, along with his best estimation for height based off of Baddi’s gesture. Perhaps it was nothing, but perhaps it was something - truth be told, Theo hadn’t spent a great deal of time interacting with the waitstaff at the event, and hadn’t even gone to the bar to get himself a drink.

“Observant or clairvoyant, your choice,” he quipped in response, though he wasn’t sure that the gentleman across from him would know the exact meaning of either word, or difference between them. “Regardless, I understand. This tall man, was he the man working the bar, or someone different? Dressed like a guest, or like a waiter?”

He paused, and tilted his head slightly. Who was it that Baddi seemed to care about at the event? If he’d just been waitstaff, surely he hadn’t been there with anyone. “No. As of an hour ago, no one else was hurt,” he said gently, before clearing his throat and glancing back at his questions. “Who was responsible for bringing the champagne out for the Minister’s toast?”

Waiter? Wait for what? Baddi frowned just a little but then the comment clicked in his head and he couldn't help but internally laugh at himself. He means worker. "The man was dressed nice like a guest," Baddi said, finally able to form a full sentence without his nervousness. The initial shock of everything was beginning to wear off, which meant his speech would hopefully become better and easier to understand. The faster he was out of here, the faster he could make sure Bastian was, too.

A breath slowly left Baddi as he heard the Jo and Bastian were alright. He weight was momentarily lifted off his shoulders and suddenly Baddi was more clear headed than he had been the whole time. Baddi roughly ran a hand through his hair, stuck in his head thinking about Jo. She'd looked so beautiful. He wasn't sure why someone like her talked to him. All the witches and wizards seemed to fear or shun the werewolves. All except her and this man apparently. He had reacted better than Baddi had anticipated.

"I'm not sure," Baddi replied honestly. He hadn't kept track of who went where. All he knew was where he was supposed to serve, even if he wasn't supposed to be there. "I don't recall any server going up the ways to the Minister."

And I’ll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again
“No server brought her the champagne?? Then who the hell gave it to her...” It wasn’t really a question, and the puzzlement and confusion flickering across his face showed that it wasn’t really directed at Baddi. It hadn’t really occurred to him that someone other than waitstaff would have conveyed the champagne from wherever it was housed previously, up to the Minister, but it wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility. The Minister’s aids had been scurrying all about the property, and Law Enforcement had been there, too. What if the drink had come from someone closer to the Minister?

And a man dressed nice, like a guest, near the bar and the barkeep?

There was a chance, of course, that this man, and anyone else he was with, had infiltrated the party to kill the Minister, and make a statement following the release of the new werewolf registry. But looking at Baddi, and listening to him fight his way to the right words, knowing that he’d been up-front with his confession of his status, Theo wasn’t convinced that that’s how they’d go about it. If werewolves wanted to make a statement, he was sure they’d do it as they already were - by attacking during the full moon.

“I do want to ask, Mr. Agnarsson, are you with anyone here, tonight?” he asked, moving his pencil down to a different set of questions. “You seemed particularly relieved that no one else was harmed this evening, as if you were worried for someone you knew. A friend of yours, perhaps? Or another worker?”
