About Gods & Monsters

site basics

G&M is an adaptation from a previous site called Cherry Wine. Many of the interactions and events that happened on Cherry Wine will be considered canon here and will be listed in the Timeline for reference. We are an AU Riddle Era site, taking place in 1950 and Tom Riddle has landed the DADA professor spot. There is no word count, though we do not consider ourselves to be a beginner's role-play.

The creators of G&M are Megs, Kat, and Lena. Our goal for this site is to create a fun, relaxed environment for writing and role-playing, while giving the members an exciting plot to immerse into. We also hope to help harbor good communication between all our members, to help keep the site feeling warm and welcoming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have an activity rule?

Yes, we do. Listed in the rules, it is stated that in order to make a second (or third or whatever) character you must have at least five thread posts. This extends to being one thread post every ten days, per character, at the very least. If you have three characters, you need to have three posts every ten days, one for each of your characters. This is the MINIMUM requirement. *This rule is lenient during busier times of the year.

How AU are you?

Everything before 1950 is canon, aside from the things that we brought over from CW with us. All those details can be found within the time-line. Marriages are to stay the same. That being said, just because you and another character are end game doesn’t mean you two have to be currently married. The terms of the marriage are up to the players. The only thing we ask is, do not try to give Tom Riddle a long lost sister/brother. We will not accept them, as we are not that AU.

Are you Canon only?

No! We allow both canons and OCs, though we do suggest you take a look at our expansive canon list. There are always obscure canons available that can be adjusted and molded into the character you want to play.

Can I play a muggle or a Squib?

Yes! You can! We allow both muggles and squibs! Muggles actually have their own subplots as well, so be sure to check that out! Keep in mind that if you have a muggle that is not currently part of the wizarding world, they cannot be threading in the magical world.

What sort of abilities and creatures are allowed?

We do have a claim here, that lists all the available abilities and so on that are allowed to be played. At the moment there are no caps, but that may change if needed.

Is this an adult only site?

Yes. The characters on this site have all finished their final years at Hogwarts. The only threading at Hogwarts will be with adults: professors, staff, other adults going to meet professors and so on.

creature & ability guide

site basics

Below is an easy, detailed guide to some of the more important creatures and abilities that can be claimed here on Gods & Monsters. We have included the information we felt was necessary and added some things where needed.

veela

Being. Veelas are possibly the most accepted of creatures, this may be due to their incredible beauty. Full-blooded Veelas are so beautiful that their presence will make men act very strangely in order to gain their favor. This is part of the Veelas power, their looks and their dance is magically seductive, making them very similar to sirens in how they effect men. However, when angered they turn into something that resembles a wrathful Harpy that can shoot fireballs from their hands. Half-veela or less are not able to manipulate fire, though the they have a diluted version of the magical beauty and dance. They also do not turn into a bird-like creature when angry, however their eyes have been known to darken subtly.

All full-blooded Veela are female. However, the further you go down the line of mixed veela and human the more likely you are to get a male. They most commonly come from Slavic regions, but that doesn’t be there aren’t any in Great Britain. They just happen to be less common there than they would be in Europe.

Half-Veela or less are not known to be persecuted or shunned.

Werewolf

Being in human Form. Beast XXXXX in wolf. Lycanthropy is an affliction transferred by blood and saliva, thus when a human is bit by a werewolf they become infected with the illness and will become a werewolf. This is only if the already afflicted person is in their werewolf form! If the afflicted is in human form and chomps down on another person the victim will not be fully infected; instead, the bitten will have 'lupine' tendencies, such as preferring raw meat. It should be noted that lycanthropy cannot be passed on to children. To make this more clear, you cannot be born with lycanthropy. Some abilities that come with being a werewolf include heightened smell, hearing, and sight in human form.

In this specific lore, werewolves cannot choose when to transform and they do not remember anything of their human selves once they have. They will not be able to recall scents from the night they were transformed either, the loss of memory occurs during and after the full moon. Transformation is on a full moon and since Wolfsbane has not been invented there is nothing to help them during this time. Their transformation turns them into a wolf, but their characteristics are much more violent than a natural wolf. Werewolves will specifically go after humans, where as wolves will not. If a werewolf does not have a human or animal to lash out at, they will become frustrated and injure themselves. Also, should the circumstance arise, if two werewolves mate while transformed their offspring will be actual wolves and not human children. This litter of pups will grow up to be very stunning creatures, the only thing separating them from a normal wolf is their incredible intelligence. Werewolves are also not harmed by silver.

Should there be any incident of a werewolf being bitten by a vampire, the werewolf will not die an immediate death. The struggle between two viruses (vampirism and lycanthropy) would cause the body to react in a similar way to the human body struggling to fight off tuberculosis and has similar symptoms such as: coughing up blood, sweating, fever, chest pains, and loss of appetite. This response could take months to years before eventually killing the host.

Werewolves are heavily prosecuted, especially in a time such as the 1950s, and because of this many try to keep their affliction a secret. For those who wish to create characters with this illness, please take note that no students were admitted to Hogwarts that suffered from lycanthropy. The first ever was Remus Lupin and since that time has not arrived, we will not be making exceptions.

vampire

Being. Vampires are also an afflicted group, however they are not classified as beast in the Harry Potter world. They are classified as being, which is defined as, "any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws". Vampires are not the undead, they are called Living Dead. So, they merely look dead and their diet is odd, so they've been labeled 'living dead'. Staying true to common lore, Vampires drink blood and are nocturnal. However, they have been known to eat things such as pasties and blood flavored lollipops. They also do not like garlic and it has been said that garlic will ward them off. As for heightened sensibilities, vampires are known to have very good eyesight in both the day time and night as well as increased hearing. Aside from this they have little to no additional abilities.

There is not much known about vampires, as they prefer to do their own thing and keep their mingling with humans to a minimum. Also, unlike werewolves, Vampires can transfer their afflication to their offspring. This creates a half-vampire and the person will possess vampire traits. Vampire bites are not curable, therefor a person bitten will become infected. Common traits found in half vampires is, pale skin and fangs. Their diet is more forgiving and they can tolerate the sun more so than their full-blooded relatives. Half-vampires are fairly accepted among the wizarding community, though they have also been shunned due to their affliction.

Should there be any incident of a vampire being bitten by a werewolf, the vampire will not die an immediate death.

It is illegal to hunt and kill Vampires.

seer

Seers are witches and wizards with a powerful gift. However, some may feel this is more of a curse. The ability they possess is being able to see into the future with their ‘inner eye’ and make predictions. These predictions are called ‘prophecies’ and are then recorded in the Ministry of Magic in the Hall of Prophecies.

The ability to use their ‘inner eye’ is not a learned gift. You cannot become a seer, you are born one. Those who have learned to read futures are often considered frauds, since they do not possess the same strength that a true seer has. Yet, most of those who claim to be seers are in fact frauds and their shops and predictions are all set up in order to earn money. This has become so common that when a true seer is found, it is unlikely anyone will believe them.

Many seers come from a long line of those who also have the gift, however it is not known how often the gift skips generations. A former common occupation for those who have the ‘sight’ was that of a ‘Naming Seer’. This witch or wizard would use their ability to look into the future of an unborn child and then suggest a name based off what they saw. It has become less popular in modern times, though in the 1950s it may have still been a thing.

metamorphmagi

These witches and wizards have the ability to change their appearance at will. However, these gifted people are incredibly rare. It is also an ability that cannot be learned, one must be born with it or else they will have to drink Polyjuice Potion like the rest of the witches and wizards. Being a trait that a person is born with, it is also one that is passed down through genetics. However, the gene is known to skip generations and be generally unpredictable. Since it is also so rare, it has been hard to do research on the ability.

Metamorphmagi are not restricted in the same sense as animagi, as the latter is only able to transform into one specific form aside from their own. Meta’s are able to switch gender at will, as well as change any other part of their appearance and do so as many times as they want. They have, potentially, an infinite number of appearances they can take on. Also unlike animagi, the wizard does not keep any specific markings during their appearance changes. This makes it incredibly difficult to track and trace those who may be using the ability.

Emotions also effect this ability. When the witch or wizard is feeling strong emotions, such as sadness or anger, there is a chance that their hair color or eye color will change due to the emotion. This is something that is difficult to control. Also, strong emotions can also render them unable to use their ability at all.

wand lore

site basics

Below you will find a small, but helpful guide to wand lore. Namely containing the types of wood and core that can be found along with their properties. We have provided links for the wood and less common cores, because there are too many to be listed here. Remember, each wand is unique and not one is the same as the other. The length and the characteristics of the wood (springy, supple, rigid etc) all play a part into how the wand fits your character best. Of course, you can always take the wand test on Pottermore for a less tedious was to get a wand made.

Common Cores

Phoenix feather- Learns most varied magic, however it is hard to be chosen by this core.

Dragonheart String- Powerful, very easily learns spells. This core can change owners easily.

Unicorn Tail- Very consistent magic and bonds strongly to the first owner.

Other cores include Veela hair and Thestral tail hair, though they are not common. To see full list of cores please go here: Cores.

Types of Wood:

There are many types of wood that can be used for a wand. Though each wand is still unique, because of the different trees used and what sort of wood they produced that time. Whether it be rigid, springy, and so on. Here is a list of all the known woods used and their properties: Wand Wood.

plot guide

site basics

In 1942, at the height of Grindelwald's reign and in the midst of a troublesome time at Hogwarts, Tom Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets and released the beast onto the school. His purpose was to continue and finish the work of Salazar Slytherin; who had sought to purge the school of muggle-borns. However, with an anonymous nuisance lurking about the castle, it became increasingly difficult to know if his secret was safe. Someone, given the name The Spider, had been revealing some of the utmost hidden secrets. In October of that year, their eight legged friend exposed a Hogwarts professor as a Grindelwald supporter and ally, sending the entire school into chaos. And for a while Tom didn't pursue his goal, until a gossipy Ravenclaw came to him with information. Olive Hornby believed that Myrtle Warren was the Spider and had plenty of evidence to prove it, or so she thought. This knowledge relieved the boy, because not only was Myrtle an easy target, but she was also a muggle-born. His previous fear of the Spider vanished and he set forth with the cleansing he had planned. Hogwarts became unsafe as students were petrified in the corridors and, at last, Myrtle Warren was found dead in the girl's bathroom. However, this was the incident that almost destroyed his home. After the girl was found dead there were talks of shutting the school down and Tom scrambled to find a way to cover up his actions as well as point the blame elsewhere. Rubeus Hagrid became the scapegoat and was expelled from Hogwarts on the grounds that it had been he who had let a creature run wild in the castle. But now that Hogwarts was said to be safe, it could remain open.

1945 was the fall of Gellert Grindelwald. It was also the year Tom graduated and immediately applied for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position. Unfortunately, he was declined, thwarting a plan he had been developing in order to gain followers. However, Headmaster Dippet encouraged Tom to return and reapply once he was older, so Tom set off to discover his deeper potential. His travels were mainly focused on Albania, as he had been assured to find Ravenclaw's lost diadem there. His journey wasn't unsuccessful. New dark magics were explored and the diadem was finally his, a possession he felt very inclined to have. It would not be the first heirloom he coveted or the last. By this time Tom had already split his soul twice, having already created two horcruxes. His path to achieving seven was quickly underway.

Five years passed and in 1950 Tom returned to Great Britain, his aspirations high and his power stronger than ever before. He had gained a greater following, an unknown group of people he called Death Eaters did his bidding. And to them he was referred to as The Dark Lord. This advancement in his stroll to power was unnoticed by the rest of the world. He applied for the spot as Defense Against the Dark Arts position, once again, and was accepted. He took a stance as an inspirational, wise man and spoke with assurance in every statement he made. His popularity among students was quick to rise and he was seen as an overall good, well rounded kind of person, wiping away any doubt people had felt for him.

dames of avalon

site basics

Because the Dames are a huge part of both Druella and Lucretia's background, we felt it necessary to post up their original subplot from Cherry Wine as background information. This information does not go into detail regarding the things these girls did during their time at Hogwarts, but can give a fairly good idea of what they might have done. Consider them to have been collectors of information and the types to know exactly how to use said information.

Known canons to have been part of this group are: Druella Rosier, Lucretia Prewett nee Black, and Walburga Black.

You must ask Kat for your female to have been part of the Dames.

The Dames of Avalon

With the Knights of Walpurgis being an exclusively boys club, there had to be a female equivalent. At least, that's what Druella Rosier thought, rather bitterly. After Tom Riddle, and her brother (mostly her brother) rejected her entrance to be a Knight of Walpurgis in her second year, she decided that she would simply make her own group.

The Dames of Avalon is the Elitist group of pureblood witches from wealthy old families. The group isn't exclusive to Slytherins, however they are mostly. The group is extremely exclusive, but the name is, unlike the Knights, known throughout the school. They're the plastics of Hogwarts. The members are picked by Druella Rosier very carefully, as she must pick those with the same values, tastes, backgrounds as her, and those she trusts... at least, trusts better than others.

The objective of the Dames isn't as clear as the Knights. People want to join simply for the status and bragging rights, since the Dames are seen like royalty to some, and a sorority to others. If they ever did have a clear objective, it would simply be a network of strong like-minded young women looking to rule the world. The perks of course of having friends like these are good as well. Rich young ladies with strings attached to certain individuals can come in handy. Druella, the Queen of Sabotage, would gladly help you ruin the relationship between your crush and a girl you hate. As long as you're one of her own.

While the Knights have their secret meetings to plot and scheme, the Dames do things a little more differently. Their name is far more known at Hogwarts, so they're advocating the discrimination against muggleborns would just target them in the worst way. So instead, they do things in more subtle ways with manipulation to ruin families of muggle and muggle born supporters. Scandals, things that could ruin their career and their name. With the influence of these young women and their combined skills and resources, they have ruined reputations and good names for the sake of their families rising in the political and corporate worlds. These are things that not even the Knights are aware of.

death eaters

site basics

The Death Eaters were formed in the mid-1940’s as the natural evolution of Tom Riddle’s Knights of Walpurgis, a group of loyal and trusted friends and classmates from his time at Hogwarts. These individuals will all either be purebloods from the Sacred Twenty-Eight families, or from families that have long-since rejected any muggle heritage, and are in support of pure, wizarding bloodlines. No women will be allowed in until the 1970’s, when he Marks Bellatrix Lestrange.

Their Headquarters is housed in a small, three-story brick building, nestled behind some greenery in the outskirts of York. The building and the land it sits on were purchased through collected funds from the Death Eaters, using a dummy name, so that it cannot be traced back to Tom or any of his followers. This building is heavily secured with complex magical enchantments to prevent it from being detected, and Tom Riddle is the Secret Keeper for the space.

Formal meetings with Tom Riddle are held at a large oak table in a spartan basement space. The rest of the building is set up to accommodate the Death Eaters in their individual meetings and discussions related to their missions. This space will be open to accepted Death Eater-aligned members of the following subplots: Infiltration, Dr. Mengle, and Haunted Heirlooms.

Knights of Walpurigs

During Tom Riddle's Hogwarts years, he had assembled a group of Slytherin pureblood boys that were known as the Knights of Walpurgis only to their own and their most trusted allies. As Albus Dumbledore has mentioned, this group consisted those who gravitated to glory and power, those that were weak and sought out protection, and the thugs who only wished to blindly follow a strong leader. However, those forerunners would soon become the first later known as Death Eaters.

The members of the gang all like to think themselves close friends with Tom Riddle, though their leader only sees them as minions for something much larger. The group is secret, and they attend secret meetings that Tom Riddle organizes. Their meetings consist of serious business to help fuel the oppression of muggle borns, and encourage the wary of muggles who have their war stirring loudly just outside their doors. During these years with Gellert Grindelwald in his height of power, Tom Riddle and the Knights of Walpurgis are all too willing to take advantage of this divide in the Wizarding Community, by thus plotting and scheming how to manipulate the young minds of Hogwarts students to sway them into believing that muggles and mudbloods are the cause of the strife.

Site Canon

site basics

Content found in this section is subject to change, expansion, and deletion. Should any information already agreed upon be changed or deleted a memo will be sent out to inform the members of GM.

The Information:

  • Ignatius Tuft: The now Minister of magic is highly allergic to a variety of nuts and animated candies. for example: chocolate frogs.
  • Ministry Memos: In the early 1930s, the Ministry of Magic decided that they would no longer use owls as a means of communication within the Ministry. This was due to the amount of owl droppings left on desks and in corridors. By 1937 they had completely transitioned to paper planes.
  • Hogwarts in WW2: During the years of World War Two, the students of Hogwarts were transported to and from Hogsmeade station by train as usual. Since the locomotive was protected by enchantments, as was the platform, it was not necessary for students to find another way to the school.

However, Muggle-born children were more susceptible to anxiety at this time than their half-blood or pureblood companions, and were often found seeking potions from the Hospital Wing. This was due to the lack of information being given to them about the war and the uneasiness of having unprotected family members. Muggle news was only received in the form of owl from a loved one (letter or news clippings).

The Ministry of Magic at this time did not offer additional aid to muggle-born families besides pamphlets which were distributed to households with of age witches or wizards. The lack of Ministry support in this time made the war harder on those that were not capable of keeping their families safe. this topic has been deemed "resolved" but remains open

  • Patronus Messengers: At some point in his life, Albus Dumbledore discovered that patronus charms could be used as quick means of communication. For some time this was used exclusively by Dumbledore and close friends, but during the war on Grindelwald, it was shared with the Head of the Auror Department who then passed the knowledge onto Augustus Potter.

Privy to those currently aurors, August and his team are known to use patronus charms as messengers during times of great chaos or emergency, when getting a orders to another set of people is near impossible. However, due to the amount of magic it takes to project and then maintain the messages, the patronus is weakened and does not often retain a corporeal shape.

For the time being this method is only known to Dumbledore and a select few DMLE employees. It will eventually be known to the Order. This topic has been deemed 'resolved' but remains open.

    Temporary Characters

    site basics

Temporary characters are playable by guests and members. These accounts will be sorted into a 'validating' member group where they will remain for the length of a site-wide event or major sub-plot event. These accounts do not require applications. They are strictly for short term use or for the purpose of testing out a character. This also allows guests to get involved in events and try out character ideas they have before joining.

    How to Begin.

  • Check the available groups/characters needed for an event.
  • Post as a guest or with current G&M account the position you are reserving and you alias.
  • Register the character account: first m. last
  • Wait for pm from Admin, this will notify you that your account had been moved to validating and you may now begin threading.
  • Join the event!
  • Restrictions & Etc.

Because this option could potentially eliminate the desire to actually create an application for a character, we have put several restrictions in place. Below you will also find any additional information.

  • Characters will only remain active during the length of an event.
  • The length to app a character after an event has ended is seven days. After this time the account will be deleted.
  • Temporary character may only thread inside of events. Normal threading is exclusive to G&M members.
  • Popular canon characters will be treated as first come, first serve. Depending on the event, the character may be exclusively offered to guests for the first few days. If it is not taken the spot will be open to members. This will be clarified inside of event announcements.
  • Positions that are not filled by guest or member will be npc'd by staff.
  • Available Temporary Positions:

    None. Please check again later.
