This is Emily*!

Now, one thing that you need to understand about Theodore Wood is that he is the most oblivious man on the planet, at least where women and romance are concerned. He has only ever been in one relationship, which spanned a total of six months more than five years ago, and resulted in the birth of his son, Liam (5), and the death of his ex-girlfriend. He's flown solo ever since.

Enter Emily*.

Now, Emily and Theo were friends back at Hogwarts - she was a year or two behind him, but they were Gryffindor Prefects together and shared a lot of the same values, so they really clicked. While she may have had feelings for him (or not, that's up to you!), he was so focused on making good marks to get accepted to the Auror Training Program that he never noticed or thought to act on any feelings he might have felt himself.

After leaving Hogwarts, they drifted apart along their own paths, as you do - he became an Auror, and she took on a career of her own (open, but nothing in the Ministry, please). They haven’t really seen or heard from each other in the last 12 years or so, but that’s about to change.

Theo has just moved to a small farm at the edge of the muggle village of Yalding in an attempt to keep his personal life, and his son, separate from the Wizarding World. He chose Yalding for its size, its welcoming vibes, and, most importantly, the fact that there seemed to be no magical folk living there.

Except for, as he will soon learn, Emily.

Why she’s living there is up to you, but she will likely be just as surprised as Theo is to find another wizard living in Yalding. Nevertheless, after the initial shock wears off (oh, yes, he will panic over the idea of yet another witch/wizard knowing about his son and knowing where he lives, which, as an auror, is a risk), these two will be able to reconnect.

Where it goes from there is negotiable! Friendship and romance are both on the table, since, at her core, Emily is going to be a person for Theo to lean on who exists outside of the Ministry, and outside of his muggle family. Please keep in mind, if they are going to become romantically involved, I would prefer for that to develop organically, and Emily will need to display a lot patience and persistence to get him to see that as a possibility.

Emily should be 26-28 years old, single, a former Gryffindor, and either half-blooded or muggleborn. I envision her being a lively person who encourages others to relax and enjoy themselves from time to time, since that is the exact role that I want her to adopt in Theo’s life - she will become his anchor, his voice of calm and reason, and the person who helps to remind him that there is still good in the world.

Her name, family, face/ethnicity, and occupation are up to you (though, please, nothing in the Ministry), and you are free to sign her up for a role in one of our awesome subplots!

My Discord is FoxFace#4790 if you’re interested!

In the past five years, Theo had managed to generally, successfully, avoid the spotlight. It was an easy enough task, once Grindelwald fell and his supporters were rounded up. Oh, some had slipped through the cracks, and they had found smaller cells of loyal fanatics over time, but his assignments and case files had become significantly lighter than they were in his early days of the Auror Office. He had become more level-headed, more interested in preserving himself and his anonymity than in being the best of the best, and it had helped to secure his role as a father to a child that this world couldn’t know about. Not yet - not until he was old enough to defend himself.

Still, he felt that old twinge of excitement as he went into the Leaky Cauldron and made his way to the specified room. Why he’d been asked to have this particular conversation, he couldn’t say. He knew the woman, Tess Weasley, but only vaguely. She’d been a bit behind him in school, though in the same house, her brother was in Law Enforcement, and they’d had a lovely night chatting in a bar some years in the past that he couldn’t recall in its entirety, but he did seem to remember fondly.

Perhaps this was a punishment - he had been a bit snarkier with Potter lately, and perhaps this was his attempt at getting him back in line. Or perhaps his previous notoriety in the war somehow made him a more logical choice to do this than some of the others, who were too young, or too private back in the day. OR, most likely, it was because his face had already been plastered across the pages of Witch Weekly, and someone was just hoping to ride that particular wave into something more beneficial to the Ministry of Magic and the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Whatever the reason, Theo was there, dressed to impress, with several topics of interest and conversation ready to go. He had always been good at interviews - he was skilled at compartmentalizing information and only saying exactly what he intended to say. Coupled with a generally charming personality, he took to the spotlight like a duck to water, and was confident in his ability to make this particular conversation go by smoothly. He ordered up some lunch to split, and a drink for himself, and sat back comfortably in his chair to wait for her arrival.

Theo had always been the sort of person who said he didn’t like animals. Oh, he found magical creatures interesting enough, and had been eager to take the class in school, but that was more of a respectful appreciation for another magical being than an actual fondness. Even as a child, he’d shown minimal interest or excitement over cats and dogs and birds and whatever other pets found their way into the household, and he had been hesitant to take on an owl when he turned eleven and went off to Hogwarts.

But it had never been that he didn’t like animals - he simply never had the time, or the mental space, to care for them properly. He had never wanted to worry about forgetting to feed the cat, or getting so lost in thought that he neglected to walk the dog. And smaller animals were even worse, with the list of things that could go wrong should a bird or a hamster escape extending so far that he felt actual anxiety over the very idea of owning one.

All of that had, however, become a non-issue since Liam came into the picture. If he’d thought cats and dogs and birds were difficult, they were nothing compared to a child. He was somehow expected to care for, keep alive, and hopefully well-educate a tiny being that would definitely outlive him - but no pressure or anything. So, when someone had brought a very pregnant kneazle into work, looking to get rid of it, he felt very little stress over taking it home to his son. Liam, of course, was ecstatic, as was the nanny, and Theo himself was a bit excited, too. And when the kittens arrived, he had called out from work citing a family emergency - with a small drawing of a cat at the bottom of the note.

He was sure it confused them, and August might hex him, but it was worth it.

It was quite apparent that the kittens were only half-kneazle - a good thing, too, since he lived in a muggle neighborhood and a full-blooded kneazle would stick out like a sore thumb. And now that they were a little bit older, a little bit bolder, and a whole lot cuter, he knew he needed to start thinking about rehoming some of the kittens. For Liam’s sake (and his, though he’d never admit it), he wanted to keep them “in the family”. There were far too many kittens for his actual family to take, but Sadie would be as good a start as any. Plus, she could undoubtedly use the pick-me-up.

The phone call was pretty benign - come over, need you to look something over for me, sooner the better, all that jazz. Usually, such calls were just a plea for input on a recipe, or some help making a costume for Liam, or insight on what to get their mother for her birthday. But not today. Theo had set the kittens up in a small study on the first floor, had kitten-proofed it to the best of his ability, and filled it with blankets and pillows and toys. When he heard her come in, he poked his head out the door with a grin. “In here, Sadie! Thanks for coming so quickly - this couldn’t wait. Well, I couldn’t wait, I needed to share this with someone, and who better than my favorite sister. You get first choice - you need it.”

The lovely girl with the coffee cart had been away for weeks, replaced by an angry little half-goblin who didn’t seem terribly fond of… anyone, really. It had really upset his entire daily routine - he typically made Liam’s breakfast, but didn’t make any for himself, preferring to pick up a fresh bagel and at least three cups of coffee when the lovely girl came around to the Law Enforcement floor. The coffee that the little wretch brought around was always cold and had the consistency of mud, and the bagels seemed to be at least a few days stale.

Today was no different, and Theo found himself wondering why he even bothered to stop at the cart, and paid money for something entirely inedible. He stared into his cup, brow furrowed in frustration at how utterly disgusting it looked, and he narrowed his eyes at the retreating back of the wretched little half-goblin, who muttered and swore and insulted his way to the end of the hallway. His stomach growled in protest as he squeezed the bagel tentatively between his thumb and forefinger, and with an exasperated sigh, he threw both into the nearest bin.

Weeks without breakfast, and only a sporadic lunch when he actually remembered to do it, had left him feeling a bit cranky overall. The Minister’s death, Natalie learning about his son, his sister suffering through another anniversary without her husband - it had been an overwhelming month, and there was only so much that he could drink and work away his frustrations. True, he had a meeting in less than an hour, but it was just another departmental meeting, where they would all share that no one had any new leads or theories about the Minister, the symbol in the sky, the old woman’s death, or anything else.

He shot off a quick note to his office to inform them that he wouldn’t be in attendance, and not to wait for him, and he left the Ministry. It was easy enough to remove his outward robes and display his muggle shirt and trousers, and with a satisfied nod, Theo took off down the road in search of food. His feet carried him to a small diner - one he hadn’t seen in quite some time. Nostalgia, and less than happy memories, made him hesitate, but hunger propelled him up to the door and into the building.

Once upon a time, he’d spent a lot of mornings and late nights here - it was a twenty-four hour joint, within walking distance of the Ministry’s guest entrance. He’d only stopped when he’d met her - for a few months, she’d actually kept him fed, and once that stopped, once she was gone, he hadn’t been able to look at this place without some sadness or loss associated with it. It had been almost six years, now, and he took a leap of faith. It smelled the same, as wonderful as always, and he got his old favorite booth, facing the door and with a great view out the window. He ordered his coffee, and a massive breakfast, and just looked around, observing everyone and anyone who passed by.

After so long, it actually felt okay to be there. He sipped his coffee and stared out the window, until he was joined at his spot. “Well, go on then, booth’s big enough for two. Best coffee in town, might as well sit and enjoy it.”

This was taking forever, and getting nowhere fast. Nearly every woman that Theo spoke with was on the verge of tears if not openly crying, trembling, quivering with anxiety and fear for themselves and their loved ones. And the men seemed so quiet and subdued by the events of the afternoon that it took twice as long to get anything useful out of them. If any of the people he’d spoken to so far had been the guilty party, they were amazing actors.

He rubbed his face, pressing lightly against his temples as he took a few minutes to breathe as the last suspect left the room and was escorted back down to the parlor. With a sigh, he called out another name to his colleagues just beyond the door, and jotted down a few notes while he waited. The last gentleman had been particularly quiet, but had been seen in the Butterfly Gardens for the bulk of the party, and Theo believed him when he’d said he hadn’t seen anything, or had anything to drink.

But while most of the people he’d interviewed thus far had been Ministry employees, or the spouses of them, he didn’t recognize the next name on his roster. It made his brow furrow in a moment of confusion. Theo didn’t know everyone in the wizarding world, of course, but even the person’s name seemed strange to him. Tapping his fingers against the desk, he glanced up as the door opened and the individual stepped inside.

“Have a seat,” he said bluntly, shuffling some parchments around until he came to the sheet he wanted. “Please state your name for the records, and tell me what brought you to the Minister’s manor today.”
